WHY FAST? · During the first winter of operation, the northbound 416/401 interchanged structure experienced numerous traffic accidents related to surface freezing. Ministry of Transportation believed that here was an opportunity to significantly reduce icing on the structure. Ideally this could be achieved by remotely sensing potential frost and ice and automatically applying a liquid deicing chemical before the ice actually forms. · FAST does just that, it continually monitors conditions at the structure and based on the detection of critical threshold parameters automatically fires, spraying the chemical just in advance of icing conditions. · Since putting the system into service there has been a 100 percent reduction in weather related traffic incidents. · For more information of Canada's first fixed automated anti-icing spray system installation for a highway/roadway application please view the slide show provided. · Article in the National Post - Ontario experiment eliminates black ice.
